Joyride: To a Reunion at Kardamyli
Joyride: To a Reunion at Kardamyli is the story of an eccentric pilgrimage.
In October 1990 three Bright Old Things, widowed muses of the Brideshead generation, set off by car from Bayswater to drive 2000 miles through France and Italy to the warm south.
Their destination was the Peloponnese, for a fortnight with old friends, the travel writer and war hero Patrick Leigh Fermor, and his wife, Joan EyresMonsell, in their legendary house on the wild Mani peninsula.
Intrepid, adaptable and fun, Coote Heber-Percy, Billa Harrod and Freda Berkeley had colourful pasts and knew everyone – from Evelyn Waugh and Alec Guinness to John Betjeman and the Prince of Wales.
Each had her own personal reasons for making the epic journey, but together their purpose was to drink to friendship in the late autumn of their lives.
